Behind team all the way

By ERIC BENDER, Free Press Sports Reporter   Like the entrepreneur who liked the product so much he bought the company, 12-year-old Keith Peiris sponsored the the club after he made the team.

Peiris is the Grade 7 St. Bernadette student and computer whiz who has established a company, Cyberteks Design, of which he is president and chief executive officer. Cyberteks Design is a division of Cyberteks Systems Corporation in London, which provides e-commerce, Web design, marketing services and Web hosting services.

Peiris' division has been recognized among this year's top 50 Web design companies in Canada and he's gained national media attention because of his age.

But Peiris also is a goalie.

It's his fourth year of hockey and he's played house league, select and Forest City level hockey while trying to make a Junior Knights team.

This year, he succeeded and is in net for the Junior Knights minor peewee A team.

Last weekend, while playing at the Tim Hickman memorial tournament, Peiris' team unveiled their new sweaters bearing the Cyberteks Design sponsorship logo. Sponsoring the team sweaters cost him $900.

"I thought about doing it (sponsoring) before, but I didn't say anything because I didn't want it to be seen as a bribe for evaluation," Peiris said.

After he was selected for the team following tryouts in July, he announced what he had in mind.

The players were happy and his coach, Roland Pourier, was relieved that the team had a sponsor, said Peiris, who also purchased a banner to flourish at home games that says: Hockey at its Best, Junior Knights, sponsored by Cyberteks Design.

Peiris wears No. 33 and describes himself as a butterfly-style goalie.

"The team isn't doing so well right now," he said.

Peiris has yet to record a shutout this year and the worst game was when he was pulled after letting in five goals. The alternate goalie was also beaten for five goals and the team lost 10-1.
